Here's what to expect with Caves and Cliffs Part 2 and the latest information regarding the Minecraft 1.18 release date.

Minecraft 1.18 will be released on November 30th , for both Java and Bedrock editions as announced on Minecraft.net. This release is part 2 of the Caves and Cliffs update, which was originally intended to be released in a single installment along with 1.17. Mojang has decided to divide Caves and Cliffs into two major updates to give them more time to work on the massive changes these releases will bring Minecraft.

And I do mean monumental. Caves and Cliffs part 1 added over 90 new types of blocks and new creatures like Glow Squid, Goats, and Axolotls; and new tools such as Lightning Rods and Spyglasses. Caves and Cliffs part 2 will fundamentally change terrain generation in Minecraft and increase the depths of levels of the world with a variety of new resources and strange things. Let's look at the Minecraft 1.18 update's features.

Terrain changes when you explore below Y=0.

In Minecraft 1.18 the world generation is being overhauled and for the first time you'll be able to dig below the Y-Level of 0.

The new depth is 64. Below the Y=0 mark, you'll find yourself in what's called the "Deepslate Layer" in which blocks of stone are transformed into deepslate block. This is also true for ore veins You'll find copper, gold, iron, redstone, and the like in deepslate veins if you're below the value of Y=0.

There are a variety of fascinating new cave structures in 1.18 because of the new underground terrain generation changes. The brand new Deep Dark biome was going to be part of the Caves and Cliffs changes, however, the biome has been delayed and its nefarious denizen, the Warden - to the release of Minecraft 1.19: the Wild Update.

The changes in terrain also mean that you'll have to look elsewhere for Diamonds. Find out more about this with our guide on how to find Diamonds in Minecraft.

The towering mountains

Minecraft 1.18 is currently being revamped. The mountains now are generated in a different way. Instead of just having one or two "extreme hills" or "mountain" type biomes, there are now five new sub-biomes that make up the various layers of each mountain:

- Mountain Meadow (Y=100-140): home to flowers and sweet berry bushes - Mountain Grove (Y=110-140): snowy home to rabbits and Polar bears. - Snowy Slopes (Y=140-170): snowy and icy, home to goats. - Lofty Peaks (Y=170+): mountains of snow, stones and ice. - Snow Capped Peaks: Similar to Lofty Peaks but cold enough to create Packed Ice.

If you're paying attention to those Y-Levels you'll see that 1.18 is increasing the maximum heights of mountains. Before they capped off at around 140 Y but now they're able to stretch all the way up to the height limit of Y=255. That's perfect for towers and castles that are high up on the mountains.

However, not all mountains will be as tall as this. Only the highest mountains will be able to boast the new Lofty Peaks or Snow Capped Peaks biomes. But, these new terrain changes are sure to bring a new sense of exploration and discovery to the peaks of any 1.18 Minecraft world. You can be sure that I will be working hard to update our list of the top Minecraft seeds once part 2 of Caves and Cliffs is released!

Besides this fascinating terrain feature, Dripstone Caves are functionally similar to other caves but will be highly sought after just because of the dripstone.
